Jessica Simpson is baring it all. Her forthcoming memoir Open Book delves deep into her struggles with addiction and insecurities. At some point in the autobiography, Simpson highlighted how her on and off relationship with musician John Mayer affected her.
The singer recalled that she met Mayer at a Grammy after-party back in 2005 hosted by Clive Davis. According to Simpson, her ex-beau told her how much he loved a song she wrote titled “With You”. Soon, the alternative rock artist began writing to her — something that she found herself absolutely smitten for.
Mayer’s letters to her escalated into more intimate notes. When the songstress and her ex-husband Nick Lachey filed for a divorce back in 2005, she started seeing other men. Simpson recalled Mayer telling her “he wanted to have all of me or nothing.”
“He’d walk into a room and pick up his guitar and you’d swoon,” Simpson described how Mayer managed to woo her in an interview with People. “I didn’t really know the man behind the guitar. And that was my mission.”
The pair dated for a while and when she fell, she fell hard. “Again and again, he told me he was obsessed with me, sexually and emotionally,” the star wrote.
While their relationship has been on again and off again, the last straw was when Mayer made some revealing comments about their sex life in a 2010 interview with Playboy. “Sexually it was crazy. That’s all I’ll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm,” he said. Simpson found this absolutely humiliating and she erased his number from her phone upon finding out. Mayer has since publicly apologized for his comments.
