Dan Aykroyd has confirmed he is joining the cast of the new Ghostbusters movie set to be released next year. He is set to reprise his role of Dr. Raymond Stanza, joining former co-stars Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver.
He said, “It’ll be all or most of the original people…It’s gonna be great,” while appearing on the Joe Rogan Experience webshow. Weaver also expressed excitement, saying in a magazine interview “it’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!”
The new film, with reports of original cast members returning, is certainly being marketed softly as the antidote to the 2016 all-female Ghostbusters reboot that was panned by fans and critics alike.
In fact, the director of the new film Jason Reitman (son of original director Ivan Reitman) was criticised for saying his film would “hand the movie back to fans” implying that he has consciously worked to correct the disappointment of the 2016 film. For many feminists, the panning of the 2016 film was a reflection of societal sexism and not a failure of the film and thus Jason’s comments appear to be agreeing with the ‘sexist’ fan backlash.
